General Manipulation

Conservative Treatment of Spinal Conditions
HUMAN SKELETON

Our office utilizes full spine adjusting / manipulative techniques. Any area of the spine can be successfully manipulated. Manipulation is not a painful process. The type of manipulation a patient undergoes depends on many factors. Specifically, the patient's age, injury, diagnosis, area of the spine and underlying medical conditions, all affect the type of manipulation that is to be employed. Our office treats a variety of spinal ailments. We have a large number of patients that primarily seek conservative treatment for spinal disc disease, both acute and chronic types and for degenerative joint disease of the spinal column.

We utilize a technique specifically for disc disease whether acute or chronic (herniated disc and/or degenerative disc) and for degenerative joint disease of the spine that may contribute to narrowing of the spinal column (stenosis) causing local back pain and/or leg pain (sciatica). This technique is called Flexion-Distraction. This is a non-torsional technique that causes distraction (opening of the bone-disc-bone junction) and decompresses the intervertebral disc (lowers intradiscal pressures). It is performed on specific chiropractic tables that enable this technique to be employed. The primary objective in treating disc disease is to create a vector of force that both pushes the bulge back into place and allow nutrients to enter the disc to facilitate scarring of the annulus which is the outer ring of the intervertebral disc. In actuality, the healing process is part reabsorption and dehydration of the bulge, as well as scarring of the outer ring of the disc. This is how a damaged intervertebral disc heals from a conservative aspect. In addition thru its mechanism Flexion-Distraction opens the facet joint from a biomechanical aspect and stretches the facet joint capsule and widens the intervertebral foramen on a segmental basis for the treatment of degenerative joint disease.

Flexion-Distraction Manipulative Table

During a treatment on this instrument, the patient lies prone while the treating physician concentrates on one vertebral motion segment at a time. The goal is to reduce stenotic effects by dropping intradiscal pressure to allow disc reduction, increasing the size of the vertebral foramen, and lowering pressure on the dorsal root ganglion and the exiting nerve roots. While concentrating on the low back, the doctor may use the instrument's caudal section to allow lateral and circular motion which returns normal motion to the spine with reduction of pain.

Core Stabilization and Strengthening

In addition to chiropractic manipulation, a patient is given a sound regime of core exercise to perform to tolerance while under direct treatment. The exercises given are directly related to the patient's specific problem area and their individual needs based upon their age, medical condition and diagnosis. The ultimate goal is to not only get the patient out of pain (reduction of symptoms) but to strengthen and rehabilitate the core (spinal) musculature so as to avoid recurrent injury. As the patient progresses, their exercise program is enhanced to the level that is appropriate for their age / injury / underlying medical condition. All patients are encouraged to continue their exercise regime beyond their release from care.
